The City of Houston

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States and has one of the largest congregations of the petrochemical industries in the world. NASA has its largest operating base at Houston with its entire mission control located there supported by the best and biggest collection of the aerospace industries and other supporting corporations. Houston is also one of the major centres of research in the medical sciences in the world. Together these make Houston a major centre for scientific and industrial research. Some of the largest US corporations are based at Houston or have major presence at Houston. It has one of the largest congregations of the energy trading companies of the US. Standards of living in Houston in particular and Texas in general are comparable to the highest in the world.

The University of Houston

The University of Houston is one of the better-known state supported universities of the USA. It is one of the leading centres of teaching/research in the world in Chemical Engineering, Superconductivity, Law, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Business Management (Operations Research, Finance), Psychology, Education, Architecture and many other disciplines. The university closely interacts with industry and the corporate sector in Houston and with several other parts of the United States. The general facilities at the University are excellent for studies and sports. Its on campus library is one of the best libraries in the state of Texas. The University has a very cosmopolitan student and teaching body drawn from several parts of the world. The Indian student body is well represented and organizes regular help and guidance activities for students from India. Some famous scientists and academics are on the faculty of the University of Houston.

Computational Mathematics Option

The Mathematics Department of the University of Houston is universally recognised as one of the best in the USA in computational mathematics. The MS in Applied Mathematics (Computational Mathematics) is really a very focussed programme. It has provided very prized jobs in the corporate sector in the USA with a wide variety of corporate houses and companies. It is better than any MCA programme being offered in India and will open job opportunities in all kinds of corporate houses and industries in the international/national arena. Any job that is available to an MCA is better suited for a student with this degree. This programme teaches scientific computing (not to be confused with programming-which is assumed known or for which a non-credit learning module is provided) merged synergistically with numerical mathematics and optimization with real world applications.

Financial Mathematics Option

The Mathematics Department of the University of Houston has some of the best faculty in the area of mathematical finance. They have enormous teaching experience and have been closely interacting with the corporate sector over the last several years. The MS in Mathematical Finance is designed for students who are keen on securing jobs with corporate houses in the international/national arena. The programme provides real world tutorial applications besides a sound knowledge base. Jobs with financial institutions in India such as ICICI, Citibank , Morgan Stanley etc. and with other international corporate houses in the USA/ UK etc. are suitable after this degree.

Master of Science in Mathematics (MSM)

The Mathematics Department of the University of Houston has some of the best faculty in the area of mathematics. They are internationally recognised mathematicians and the department has enormous teaching/research experience. This programme prepares students to be professional mathematicians in various areas of pure and applied mathematics.

Application

Students will be enrolled in August 2003 into the University of Houston on the basis of the recommendation of the ICMS. GRE and TOEFL requirements shall be waived provided the ICMS recommends the student.

Teaching

 The first year of teaching will take place at the ICMS, St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. The second year of teaching will take place at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Houston, Houston, Texas, USA.

Internships

 Each enrolled student will be provided (at Houston) a paid internship during the summer break, between the first year and the second year (June –July 2003) at leading corporate houses in Houston such as Hewlett-Packard, Schlumberger, etc. These internships will count towards the MS Degree i.e. credit will be awarded.

Fee Structure
First Year : A nominal fee will be charged at Delhi. In addition the paid internship at Houston will be more than enough for airfare and startup expenses at Houston

Second Year : For the second year in Houston: Each enrolled student will be a paid Teaching Assistant at Houston. His/her salary will be enough to take care of all living expenses. Fees will be waived.

Eligibility

In order to apply for the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics Degree a prospective candidate must have one of the following:

1. B.A./B.Sc.(Hons)/M.A./M.Sc in  Mathematics from Delhi University or an equivalent degree from a recognised university.
2. B.A./B.Sc.(Hons)/M.A./M.Sc in  Physics from Delhi University or an equivalent degree from a recognised university.
3. B.A./B.Sc.(Hons)/M.A./M.Sc in  Economics from Delhi University or an equivalent degree from a recognised university.

In order to apply for the Master of Science in Mathematics Degree a prospective candidate must have a B.A./B.Sc.(Hons)/M.A./M.Sc in  Mathematics from Delhi University or an equivalent degree from a recognised university.
