Programme in Mathematical Finance |
A one-year part time programme in mathematical finance is conducted by the ICICI Centre for Mathematical Sciences. This course best exemplifies the role of the Centre as a focal point of interaction between the academic and corporate worlds.
The programme is intended to provide students with a foundation in finance. Students will learn basic portfolio theory, asset and option pricing, corporate finance and international financial management. The course will be beneficial for those intending to follow careers in the financial world, at regulatory bodies, or wishing to pursue higher studies in the dynamic field of financial economics. In order to allow students to gain a proper understanding of modern analytical and quantitative techniques, they will be given rigorous training in areas of mathematics like linear algebra, multi- variable calculus, optimisation theory, probability theory and stochastic processes.
It must be noted that though the topics are approached in a quantitatively and theoretically rigorous manner, emphasis will not be on learning the mathematics and theory for its own sake, but rather as tools with which to grasp the concepts involved.
Core teaching will be done by the fellows of the Centre, which consist of members of faculty from the Mathematics, Economics and Physics departments of St. Stephen's College. In keeping in line with the applied nature of the course, the teaching will be supplemented by periodic lectures and workshops wherein eminent practitioners of the field, especially alumni of the college occupying premier positions in the world of finance, will closely interact with students.
To provide an opportunity for students to apply what they have learnt in the classroom to the real world, they will be required to complete internships with leading financial institutions in India and abroad. Past students have worked on a variety of projects including risk-models for online brokerages and simulations of derivative markets gathering valuable work experience as undergraduates. Upon successful completion of the course, students have joined prestigious corporations or have pursued higher studies at renowned institutions abroad.
